Introduction-Antarctica
Antarctica is one of the coldest, driest, and windiest continents in the world. Its name came from the Greek word which means opposite to the bear. Antarctica is also the fifth largest continent in the world. The first person to discover Antarctica was Roald Amundsen in 1802. The second person to discover Antarctica was Captain Robert Scott. Antarctica is like the Sahara desert because there is not much rain. It holds 70% of Earth’s fresh water and 90% of its ice. If Antarctica’s ice melts it would raise Earth’s sea level by almost 70 metres. It is nearly 4,000,000 square kilometres. In winter Antarctica reaches up to minus 89 degrees.
Interesting facts
Antarctica is bigger than Europe and almost double the size of Australia. The coldest recorded temperature on Earth occurred in 1983 at Vostok Station, Antarctica, measuring a rather chilly −89.2 °C (−128.6 °F). Since people dont live in Antarctica permanently scientists and other people study about Antarctica.
